Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, is a bustling city that beautifully blends the old and the new. I stayed in Colombo for two days and I've got the perfect itinerary to share with you if it's your first time hitting up Colombo!
Grangarama Maha Temple
Immerse yourself in the spiritual and cultural richness of Colombo by visiting the Grangarama Maha Temple. This revered site is not only a place of worship but also a testament to the city's diverse cultural heritage. Known for its intricate architecture and serene atmosphere, the temple offers visitors a unique insight into Sri Lanka's religious practices and traditions. Whether you are seeking spiritual enlightenment or simply wish to appreciate the temple's aesthetic beauty, a visit to the Grangarama Maha Temple is a must on your Colombo itinerary.
In the Grangarama Maha Temple, one particular element that caught my attention was the elephant model situated within the temple grounds. This model struck me as unique and distinct from the Buddhism styles I have encountered in South East Asia or East Asia. The elephant, a revered creature in Sri Lankan culture, is often associated with wisdom, power, and longevity. The presence of the elephant model added another layer of cultural richness to the Grangarama Maha Temple, making the visit even more memorable.
Make sure to visit the Grangarama Sima Malaka, and if you have time, don't miss out on the small temple located on the nearby lake. This serene spot provides a tranquil contrast to the bustling city, making it a perfect addition to your itinerary.
Fort Area
Start your journey in the historical heart of Colombo, in the Fort area. Here, you'll find remnants of the colonial era, including the Old Dutch Hospital, now transformed into a shopping and dining precinct, and the iconic Clock Tower, a testament to the city's rich history. Don't miss the chance to explore the bustling streets of Pettah, Colombo's main market area, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture and pick up a few souvenirs.
One landmark that stands out in this area is the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, an architectural wonder known for its vibrant red and white brickwork. This iconic mosque is a testament to the city's rich cultural diversity and is a must-visit.
While you're there, make sure to try out some local cuisine at the market. One recommended dish is the Kottu Roti, a popular Sri Lankan dish made from godhamba roti (a type of flatbread) and vegetables, egg, or meat, and spices. It's a delicious, filling meal that's perfect for refueling during your exploration of the city.
As you navigate the bustling streets, you'll likely catch a glimpse of the Lotus Tower, a remarkable 350-meter tall tower that dominates the city's skyline. This impressive structure is a symbol of the city's rapid development and modernity, contrasting beautifully with the traditional aspects of the Fort area.
Iconic Coastal Train Ride
A trip to Colombo isn't complete without a journey on the iconic coastal train. This unforgettable ride runs parallel to the sea, offering stunning views of the Sri Lankan coastline. The train ride is a unique way to experience the city's natural beauty, with the Indian Ocean on one side and the bustling cityscape on the other. Make sure to add this scenic journey to your Colombo itinerary for a truly immersive experience.
I took the coastal train ride in Colombo was around 3pm when there were fewer crowds. I embarked on this journey from Mount Lavina to Kollupitiya, which in my view, offers the best vistas of the sea. To fully enjoy this picturesque scenery, make sure to be on the left side of the train when facing forward. Remember to keep your belongings secure, as windows are often kept open. Although the coastal train ride is generally safe, it's essential to stay vigilant and mindful of your surroundings for a smooth and enjoyable journey.
I strongly suggest avoiding peak hours, especially after 6pm. Indeed, I made the mistake of travelling during this time once and had to squeeze into the train. While it was an unique experience, it's certainly more comfortable to travel when it's less crowded!
